San Francisco Cracks Down on Nudists

San Francisco is known for being a liberal and culturally diverse city and the freedoms of naturists are no exception. It is completely legal to take a walk around town in the buff (as long as you are not aroused) but now some naturists are worried about the preservation of those freedoms since the arrival of a controversial new proposal headed by Supervisor Scott Wiener. Wiener's plan would require nudists to cover up when entering a restaurant and to put down a towel or napkin before taking a seat in any public place. The first offense would cost $100.

"It's codifying what's already nudist etiquette," said nudist George Davis. Other naturists are voicing their concerns. A group of nudists held a Nude-In on the Castro Commons to "normalize public nudity" and to protest Wiener's plan which they say could ultimately lead to the barring of public nudity altogether. "It's bound to happen-I've been thinking that for some time," said Mitch Hightower, a local nudist and organizer of the protest.

"Why is it such a big deal? It shouldn't be, nudity is not a crime. Police have much bigger problems to deal with in the city than a few naked guys sitting in the sun," Hightower told SF Weekly. This is the second Nude-In that Highwater has organized. He says that he is all for sanitary nudity but doesn't trust San Francisco officials when they say that their goal is not to ultimately ban nudism.

"It's about basic public health," said Wiener to the Times. "What this does do is require that people show some basic courtesy and decency toward their fellow citizens when they are naked," Scott Wiener told The Chronicle.

But the Nude-In group is not so sure:

"How long can we hang out before the cops show up? What will you say if someone challenges your right to be naked? Make a statement for body freedom and acceptance, come get buck naked in public with us! Remember your camera! Forget your inhibitions!"
